Hola Beautiful Ones!

This is late but I'm here. MommaOrchid is doing well recuperating from her surgery. We'll be staying w/her overnight just to baby her and make sure she stays fine.

Well....on Monday, after 1 1/2 years, I finally got my hair straightened and trimmed. I was amazed at how much my hair has grown since I first did my BC (big chop) more than 2 years ago. The stylist actually trimmed 2 inches off of my ends. Yes, they were in bad shape. I won't promise to get my hair trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks. Yes, I'm stubborn like that. But I will go back in about 6 months.

**By the way, I went to Too Groovy Salon & Spa in midtown Atlanta. Great service! Great w/natural hair! Courtney was my stylist.**

Unlike the first time I had my hair straightened, I am not in a tizzy to wash it out. Just enjoying the change. Unfortunately, on the day of my appointment, it rained...all day. Yes, so you can only imagine how my tight curls dropped throughout the day. On top of which, I went to the Maxwell concert (Ooh Weee! Give me a moment here........*sighs*), so by mid-concert my hair was slightly "Chaka Khan-ish". It was rather cute.

**This photo is actually before the concert so it's not in its full Chaka Khan glory**

To possibly get rid of the frizziness and restore sleekness to my ends I added some of my Shealoe concoction. My current shealoe concoction is unrefined shea butter, aloe vera gel, some extra virgin coconut oil, few dashes of Jamaican Black Castor Oil, few dashes of Vitamin E oil and the essential oils of Lavender and Lemongrass.

Then I pincurled my hair and its been like this all day. It's been raining the past couple of days. Don't worry. I wrapped it up and put a cute hat on top of it. I'll take it down tomorrow and see what happens. I'm wanting to wear it straight for about two weeks during which I'll try braid-outs, twist-outs, buns and such. Once the two weeks are up, I'm doing an ayurvedic hair paste. So excited about it! I've been itchin' to try this for awhile. I'm fully prepared w/Amla, Brahmi, Shikakai, Bhringraj(Maka) and Neem powders. I'll save that for another post.

Once I take the pincurls down (Wednesday), I'll definitely takes pics of my hair. I believe tomorrow will be rain-free. I'm curious to see what type of effect the shealoe will have (if any) on the frizz factor. And yes, I will post an update on next Tuesday.

If and when you've straightened your hair, what did you use to battle the frizzies?....

  1. Glad MommaOrchid is doing well. Your hair is beautiful and you look so pretty.

  2. Wonderful to hear MommaOrchid is doing well. She is in my prayers.
Girl you are rocking the new do, as always.
Where do you buy your essential oils from?

  3. Many blessings to MommaOrchid! I extend many well-wishes your way! I love the pics with the new style too. You better work it diva!

  4. Aren't you gorgeous!

I've gotta tell ya, I find the whole process absolutely fascinating. It's like entering into a foreign world for me. I can't wait to see the next batch of photos.

I remember years ago, watching Oprah, and her saying that white girls lose sleep over the shape of their bodies and black girls lose sleep over the shape of their hair. Ha!

Just yesterday, I saw a preview for Good Hair, Chris Rock's new film that's due out this month. Looks like a good one!

  5. Thank you, Beautifuls!
@angelkakes - I get my essential oils from Mountain Rose herbs and an organic coop (Sevananda) in Atlanta.
@Earthmother - My sweetie says the same thing. Not just about me and my love affair/fascination w/my hair but about me and my raw foods journey. Him growing up in Ethiopia gives him a "slightly" different perspective of some things. Yes, everyone w/natural (chemical free) hair is aware of Chris Rock's movie coming out. I'm honestly not sure if I want to see it. The previews are funny enough but will it really get down to the issue at hand which is black/mixed/biracial people accepting and loving their God given hair and themselves.

  6. your hair looks great! When i straighten i usually do a keratin conditioning (aphogee) and that really works out the frizz

  7. The oil mix you use is a delicious combination ;-) wow I wonder how it would smell!?

  8. You look gorgeous in the full length photo! I haven't straightened since 2007 and I am too afraid to do it now, lol. But I'm in Houston so I think I used some light, oil based something I know that's not helpful. But I knew it would only last a couple days in our humidity so I didn't take it too seriously.

I'm glad Mama Orchid is well. How was Maxwell?

  9. CO..I have something for you on my blog. :-)

  10. How did I miss this...beautiful!

  11. Your hair looks great! I live in ATL as well and also frequent Sevananda.I was at the Maxwell concert and he was just.......Awesome! I also thought Common was great, have never seen him live and was very impressed.

  12. Well alright, you looking good there!

  13. Gorgeous, dahling! I have a friend that is doing the samething this weekend, I can't wait to see her new do! Thanks for sharing.

  14. Cute!! You look beautiful!! (But could you look any other way? :) )

  15. Thank you everyone! You all are so kind and sweet.

  16. Very pretty! How did it feel, did you miss your curls immediately?

  17. @Skibies - I actually didn't unlike the first time I had this done 1 1/2 yrs ago. Honey, the 1st time I wanted to wash my hair immediately. It's a miracle I lasted for 2 days. I was so scared that my texture was gone.
It's cool now. Different perspective so I'm okay with it. My biggest thing is trying to hold out for the ayurvedic hair treatment I'll be trying this weekend. On top of which, I'm a sweater when it comes to workouts.
